This is Gracie, who visited our class, having her heart rate taken by one of the students. The teachers of VET all have different backgrounds. My background being in veterinary work, I tend to teach what I know! Many of our students go on to do vet nursing.
This year, we have 42 students in 3 different classes studying animal studies, for one afternoon a week. They come from all different schools in the area. In my class I have students from 5 different schools. Attendance is one afternoon a week for 3 terms a year (we have 4 terms in the year and they do not come to TAFE in term 4). The curriculum is covered over 2 years, so that when they leave school they have a Certificate II in Animal Studies. At a Cert II level they are expected to be able to carry out tasks under supervision.

Hello Sunita
ReplyDeleteYou write that the students come from five different schools. Are there requirements that the students should have prior knowledge before studying Animal Care or can every student who wish to take the course?
You also write that the you tend to teach what you know. How do you make sure that the students get the knowledge they need and are entitled to according to the syllabus/curriculum?
Margareta
Hi Margareta,
ReplyDeleteThere is no prior knowledge requirement for the students. I always follow the curriculum set down by the government, which is quite specific, and use the TAFE assessment guidelines (which are their interpretation of the government standards). But of course there is leeway within the curriculum, so when I use examples, I often use examples from animals I have treated recently, or from different workplaces I have been in over the years. I find that relating the curriculum back to a specific case or work situation helps the students remember a bit better! Of course this applies to all of us :-)

Hi Sunita
DeleteI agree totally, that relating to specific cases makes the teaching more reality based and vivid, for the students.
Is it only on veterinary care as they learn the dog or they read even if the dogs' behaviors?
