This is Norman the koala. We visited the local zoo at Dubbo last year, and Norman is one of the residents at the zoo. He particularly likes to come out and meet visitors and hug the keepers. Koalas are becoming increasingly rare in the wild due to habitat destruction and disease. There is an education unit at the zoo - a large part of their work is education of school and college groups of children. In the education unit they have several animals - from koalas to reptiles - they bring out to interact with the students.

Hi
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice-looking koala! It's very depressing to hear about them getting rare in the wild! I wish for the koalas to stay and grow healthy in their natural habitat!
What is done to give the koala bears better habitat?
Are the authorities taking action?

Koalas was my favorite animal when i was young. They are so cute I think. I’ve heard that they can be quite aggressive in the wild. Is this true? Are the student allowed to handle the animals behind the scenes or are that prohibited? I am split in my opinions about letting students handle animals. At one hand all animals are better let alone, but on the other, the students have to learn somehow. I let my students handle animals, but I clearly state that this is not good for the animal itself.
