| Hvilan is a small boardingschool beautifully situated in the south of Sweden |
12 teachers are empoyed here educating Gardeners, Florists and Tree Workers. There are about 70 young pupils studying at the school. Most of them are becoming Gardeners in the Natural Resource Use Programme. It’s a vocational programme that leads to a vocational diploma. There are also 40 adult students becoming licensed Tree Workers.
I
myself, Margareta von Rosen, am a landscape architect and teaches
gardening, for
instance like pruning, plant knowledge, garden design, biology, natural
resources...
Oh by the way, I forgot to tell you that I'm writing this blog as a task in my studies at the University of Gothenburg. My goal is to get a diploma as a vocational teacher and I did my first internship at Hvilan.

Hello Froken
ReplyDeleteYour work sounds fascinating! I have so many questions.
How old are your "young pupils"?
Do the adult students and the younger students sometimes work in the same class groups or are they quite separated?
Why is it a boarding school? Is that usual?
Do the adults board as well?
Hello Susanne!
DeleteI'm so pleased to find your comments in my blog! Here are my answers to your questions:
How old are your "young pupils"?
They are welcome to study at Hvilan after finishing primary school. So I think you would call Hvilan some kind of high school or secondary school. The young pupils are approximately between 16-19 years old.
Do the adult students and the younger students sometimes work in the same class groups or are they quite separated?
They are quite separated. It requires high school grades to apply to the program for tree workers.
Why is it a boarding school? Is that usual?
It is quite usual in the Natural Resource Use Programme. Many of the schools have large areas of orchards, greenhouses and stables for pets, cows and pigs. So you don't find many of these schools in the urban areas. They are usually situated in the countryside and are quite rare compared to many other high schools. Many of the students have to travel quite far to get to the school. That's why it is a boarding school.
Do the adults board as well?
No, they could do it, but more often they have their driving licenses and have no problems to find accommodations in the towns nearby.
